By Dana Ford LOS ANGELES, May 10 (Reuters) - Chinese solar wafer maker LDK Solar Co Ltd (LDK.N) forecast stronger-than-expected current quarter revenue on Monday, reinforcing hopes for a rebound in demand and sending its shares up 5 percent.LDK is the latest in a string of solar companies to report a sales surge this year from 2009, when tight credit dampened the market.
Planned cuts to solar subsidies in Germany, the world's No. 1 solar market, in the second half of this year have pulled demand for the renewable power source forward, as developers rush to install projects before the subsidies are lowered.LDK's second-quarter revenue forecast of $460 million to $490 million beat Wall Street's target of $382.3 million, as reported by Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.
And its 2010 forecast of $1.6 billion to $1.7 billion in revenue also outpaced average analysts' expectation of $1.4 billion.
"My initial gut reaction would be, the expectation is that June results will be a little bit stronger on the growth and operating margin line than even March's were," said Morningstar equity analyst Stephen Simko.
LDK, like some of its peers in the industry, said despite fears in the market that demand would drop off after the German incentive cuts, it did not expect a major fall in prices, as it sees growth outside Germany, the world's No. 1 solar market.
"The improvement in ASP (average selling price) trends throughout the year should allow us to expand our gross margin in the next few quarters," LDK's Chief Financial Officer Jack Lai said on a conference call with investors.
SunPower Corp (SPWRA.O) and China's JA Solar Holdings Co Ltd (JASO.O), which raised its sales forecast last month, are scheduled to report first-quarter earnings on Tuesday.On both, analysts are expecting strong sales, but will be watching margins and estimates closely.
WIDENING MARGINS
LDK, based in Xinyu City in southeastern China, is the world's largest maker of multicrystalline wafers.Its gross margins for the first quarter rose to 15.7 percent, compared with 9.9 percent in the fourth quarter and just 1.7 percent in the first quarter a year ago.
Quarterly revenue rose 22.7 percent from a year ago to $347.6 million, beating the $325.86 million forecast by analysts, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.
For the first quarter, LDK said it shipped 426.7 megawatts of wafers and 31.3 MW of modules, above an earlier estimate.
It predicted it would have wafer shipments of between 460 MW and 480 MW and module shipments of between 60 MW and 70 MW in the second quarter.For the year, the company forecast wafer shipments of between 1.7 gigawatts and 1.8 GW and module shipments of between 200 MW and 300 MW.
Net income for the first quarter was $7.2 million, or 6 cents per share. That sharply exceeded the 1 cent per share analysts had predicted, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.LDK's shares rose to $7.31 in extended trade, after ending the day at $6.96 on the New York Stock Exchange.
