Taiwan-based AU Optronics Corp, the world's No. 3 liquid crystal display maker by revenue, last week signed a definitive agreement with Silicon Valley-based Sunpower Corp to set up a joint venture to operate and own a solar-cell plant in Malaysia.
The US$700-million JV will produce polysilicon solar cells and capable to produce 1.4 gigawatts of light-energy-conversion solar cells annually.
The Taiwanese firm and SunPower, the largest manufacturer of residential and commercial solar system in the U.S., will each take a 50% stake in the JV, and investment in the project will be split equally.
The cooperation marked AUO's first move into the fast-growing solar-cell manufacturing industry.
