BALTIMORE — Constellation Energy says it is working with federal prisons in Virginia and New Jersey to cut energy use and greenhouse gas emissions.
Constellation says the projects at prisons in Fairton and Petersburg, Va., will pay for themselves with no upfront costs.
Solar power, smart energy controls and other technologies are expected to cut energy use 27 percent and water use 42 percent at the New Jersey prison. In Virginia, biomass heating, solar power, and electric vehicles are among the improvements.
The White House said today it wants to cut greenhouse emissions from indirect sources such as employee driving 13 percent. That follows a directive that federal agencies cut pollution from direct sources, including buildings, 28 percent in the next decade.
