PENNSVILLE TWP. New Jersey's debt crisis has Pennsville Township Committee making cuts like most of New Jersey's 566 municipalities, and now the committee has moved ahead with making a cut to their own salaries official.
It was announced in March that they planned to cut their salaries. And late last week, an ordinance that would cut all five committee members annual salaries by 10 percent was introduced.
Each of the five men voted in favor of the 10-percent cut at the meeting.
For Committeemen John Crawford, Steven Landis, and Richie G. Raine, Deputy Mayor Robert McDade and Mayor Richard Barnhart, the ordinance would reduce salaries by $750.
Regardless of rank or title, committee members are all paid the same salary amount, which is currently set at $7,500.
But this new ordinance would bring each of their annual salaries to $6,750 per member, per year saving the municipality $3,750.
"We thought it was only fair to the employees of Pennsville, who took cuts, that we share the sacrifice with them," said Barnhart.
According to the ordinance, the pay cuts are retroactive to Jan. 1, 2010.
Committee members receive their $7,500 salaries in segments, not in one lump sum. At the end of the municipality's fiscal year, the committee's pay will have made up the difference.
In the official ordinance, the reason why the committee cut their own salaries is presented: "It is both necessary and proper, in order to ensure the health, safety and welfare of the citizens of this township, and more specifically because of the current economic crisis and the budget constraints."
The final hearing and potential adoption of the ordinance will take place Thursday, June 3, during the Pennsville Township Committee meeting in the township hall. The public is welcome to attend the 7 p.m. meeting.
