A newly unveiled solar array in Massachusetts is offering a glimpse of the potential benefits an increasingly green economy may deliver in the coming years.
National Grid announced the completion of the first utility-owned solar array in Massachusetts, which passed a law two years ago allowing utilities to generate as much as 50 megawatts of solar energy.
The project was also able to give a boost to the Massachusetts economy by creating about 50 green jobs. According to National Grid, the photovoltaic panels for the project were manufactured by Evergreen Solar, a Massachusetts company, while other parts were also manufactured and installed by area companies.
The photovoltaic array is located in the town of Whitinsville and will contain 4,683 solar panels, each of which will produce 210 watts of electricity. The panels will be located on the roof of National Grid's New England Distribution Center.
"Projects such as this take skilled and talented hands that have working knowledge of cutting-edge technologies. Without our many and varied local solar experts, this accomplishment would have been much more challenging,” said National Grid executive Ed White.
